Is igcount safe? How it works and why it won't get you banned

Last updated: June 6, 2026

Most unfollower apps make you log in with your Instagram password and then act on your account, and that is the behavior Instagram bans people for. igcount works differently.

How igcount works

The whole process happens in your desktop browser:

  1. You install the free igcount Chrome extension and sign in to igcount with Google.
  2. You open your own Instagram profile in the same Chrome window, just like how you normally use Instagram.
  3. You click the extension and start a snapshot. The extension reads your follower and following lists from the Instagram tab that you keep open.
  4. That data is then compared against your past snapshots to surface who unfollowed you, who doesn't follow back, and how your audience changes over time.

Why it doesn't get your account banned

We mimic how you use Instagram, not a bot. The extension runs inside the browser you're already using and only reads what Instagram has already loaded for you. To Instagram, this looks like a person viewing their own followers list.

We never act on your account. igcount cannot post, comment, like, follow, unfollow, or send messages. It can't do the things that get accounts flagged and banned, like automated following, bulk actions, or third-party logins.

Why we don't use Instagram account integration

Most unfollower apps ask you to log in with Instagram or connect your account through an API. That hands a third party a session or token for your account. Unusual access patterns from those integrations are a common reason accounts get rate-limited, locked, or banned.

igcount avoids all of that. There is no Instagram login, no OAuth permission to grant, and no access token for anyone to store or leak. igcount never has access to your account, so there is nothing to misuse and nothing for Instagram to flag.

So we use Google login

We use Google sign-in to prove we don't do anything with your Instagram account. We just want you to have a password-less login. We don't want the responsibility of keeping your passwords. Google login only identifies you to us so your snapshots are saved to the right account. It gives igcount no access to Instagram. There is no Instagram password, no Instagram permission, and no Instagram token at any point.
